讲座题目:On the use of an impromptu speech/interview as an incisive evaluation technique and as a method of teaching English as a second language in a Survey of British Literature class

 

主要内容:

This lecture/discussion concerns the application of an IELTS oral English test as a proper way to understand the level of a student's fluency as well as a way of encouraging and teaching English as a second language. The basic test involves the presentation of two sets of questions on British literature, exploring on the one had specific British authors' writing and on the other hand a question that is more open-ended, involving the student's preferences of writers they favor. First, the student has four minutes to take notes, without dictionaires or other aids, on the question and then is asked to give a four minute speech using only her/his notes, followed by a four minute interview by the teacher, exploring the student's knowledgeability and level of English fluency. Groups of five students take the examination, one by one. After the test is over, each student briefly meets with the teacher to review how well the student did, to learn about the number grade given (1 through 100), and then is encouraged to improve in various ways by the teacher, and finally, each student asked if each student has any questions to pose to the teacher. This, examination, though very time-consuming, is an excellent way to discover how well a student is doing in English as well as a way to be very encouraging, and to learn about particular student concerns. An examination not only for discovery of student competency, but a method of seriously being encouraging to a student as well as learning about individual student questions, concerns.
